ETG Podcast: Episode 19

First off, I want to say that this was one of the best interviews I’ve done so far. Marcus Sheridan from TheSalesLion.com was kind enough to allow me an interview and it was an incredible learning experience for me.

If you’re not familiar with Marcus, he is a successful Internet marketer, speaker, consultant, and business owner. And he has one hell of a busy schedule.

Before I met Marcus, I thought I was pretty on top of things. I thought I was checking all the right boxes as a blogger; connecting with people, writing great posts, and building a brand.Β  After talking with Marcus for over an hour, I realized just how much work I needed to do.

I began to understand the real value we can provide to our readers. Marcus is all about building relationships friendships and actively seeks to help people every single day.

How many of us can say the same? Not me.

I actually wrote a post shortly after our interview called “The Quickest Way To Blogging Failure”, which was about bloggers being selfish (actually, me). It was a real wake up call and I kind of had an a-ha moment during the interview.

It just made so much sense when Marcus started talking about his approach to blogging.

Our conversation inspired me to change my attitude from a “what can I get done today” to a “how can I help people today”.

Since our interview, I have been reading Marcus’ blog like crazy and love his approach to building his online business. His community is one of the most engaged I’ve come across and there’s a reason for that. He cares. A lot.

If there’s one thing I learned from him, it’s that it’s all about relationships!

That sounds pretty cliche but how many of us are actually trying to build relationships with our readers and others? And I don’t mean just responding to their comments and sending out a few tweets.

I mean really, truly connecting with them and letting them know that you are there if they need anything. I mean being willing to help them succeed even when you’d rather be doing other things. I mean being committed to doing remarkable things for people you don’t know yet.

Our Interview

Like I mentioned, this was one of my favorite interviews I’ve done and it’s packed with awesome and incredibly useful information.

Some of my favorite discussions were about:

  • How to use inbound marketing to build a successful blog (and what exactly inbound marketing is!)
  • The incredible power behind networking
  • Why you need a great platform for your business
  • The difference between hitting singles and hitting home runs with regards to blog monetization
  • Why you need to know what your schtick is (and what it means πŸ™‚
  • The distinction between commenters and customers
  • Why community is critical for blogging success

I can honestly say that after our chat, I am officially a fan of his. If you haven’t checked out his blog and you’re trying to build an online business (or any business), you need to.

I’d love to hear your comments about the interview and don’t forget to subscribe to my Podcast in iTunes.Β  Also, if you would leave an honest review for meΒ  there, that would be awesome! Thanks
