Make Your Passion Pay You
Jan

I love the saying “make your passion pay you”. It represents my whole outlook on life. Its meaning is simple: find what you love to do and turn it into an income producing job or business.
What I don’t understand is how so many people can go through their entire lives doing something they don’t like or care about. It’s really sad to see so many people living without hope.
I recently received an email from a woman who hates her job as much as I do (yea, that’s a lot!), and seemed to be at a loss for what to do. After reading her email a few times, it occurred to me that this woman had already given up on living her dreams or pursuing her passions.
The thing I struggled with the most was that she views her goals as unattainable. She talks about how her dreams could never be a reality and there is no way she could venture out and try to start the business she always wanted to.
When someone has given up on their dreams, it’s heartbreaking. There is no reason to ever give up on them. I won’t go into a litany of all the people who have turned adversity into success, but there are thousands of people who have met with tragedy, injury, or heartbreak, who have overcome the odds and have gone on to achieve great success. What’s our excuse?
Excuses Are Bullshit
People are filled to the brim with excuses why they can’t do something. Just because you are struggling to pay your bills, doesn’t mean you can’t switch jobs. Just because you have children to take care of, doesn’t mean you can’t start your own business. It happens every day.
Look around you. What do you see? Do you see a world full of people living happy lives or do you see what I see, which is a world filled with people just trying to make a living and get through life without too many catastrophes?
Can you imagine how great this world would be if more people actually liked their lives?? Grinding out a shitty job or miserable marriage for years on end is not conducive to enjoying your life. Yet, we do it anyway.
I’ve often heard the saying “it’s just a job, don’t take it home with you”. While this may be fine in theory, how many of us can really turn off our emotions just like that? Our emotions influence our behaviors on an major scale and if you have negative emotions about your job, how can you flip a switch and leave it behind? I know I can’t do it.
Life shouldn’t be difficult. Of course we will all face challenges throughout our lives, but it should not be a daily struggle.
We really need to start thinking on a grander scale. Life will be over before we know it, so we need to ask ourselves a few vitally important questions:
- How do we really want to spend our lives?
- What makes us truly happy?
- What are THE most important things in our lives?
- How can we make the absolute most of our limited time on Earth?
If we can honestly answer these questions, we have the foundation to build an extraordinary life! I’m talking about a life that we LOVE.
The truth is that most of us will never answer these questions because we will never take the time to try.
Take The Time To Create A Better Life
The average person will spend 40 hours at a job they hate, 12 hours watching television, and waste another 20 hours each week, yet won’t take the time to figure out how to create a better life for them selves. Insanity I say!
Here is the best advice I can give you:
- Take the time needed to find your true passions in life
- Decide that you are going to follow your passions
- Take action on turning your passions into an everyday part of your life
- Don’t ever stop pursuing what you love.
I think this is the recipe for massive success in life. When you truly have a burning passion for something and you take action towards it, great things will happen.
I see absolutely no reason that we cannot turn our passion into a career. Getting caught up in the misbelief that we can’t do it is the problem. Let go of the notion that you can’t get what you want in life, because you can….

Hi Steve
I hear you. I had the dream to have my own home business. Had a few hiccups with the plan, met some scammers, tried a few things that didn’t work and then I discovered blogging 🙂
Have just started my fledgling business and plan for it to be hugely successful. Hard work and perseverence with a large dose of patience being applied liberally at the moment 😉
And it sure helps having other experienced bloggers and marketers as my blogging buddies who are helping me and cheering me on.
May 2011 be all you hope and plan for Steve. Looking forward to your updates on how you too are progressing with your dreams. Dream big and see those dreams unfold 🙂

Steve
Patricia,
I love to hear when people have big dreams and just go for it! I truly hope you keep your midset positive, continue to work hard, and see the success that you want. Here’s to a great 2011.

You make very good points. In agile company management one of the main points is don’t spend the time on saying why you can’t do something, instead spend it on finding a way to do it.
Steve
That’s a good point, Dirc. Finding solutions solves problems, complaining doesn’t!

A tip for making things seem less un-possible – do not only write goals but write the things needed to accomplish them. Many times after you see everything written things seem easier.

Man, I can totally relate. Last year, I was working way over 40 hours working for a poorly run government agency that was handing out Stimulus funds. Needless to say, they had no idea what they were doing and when the Feds came looking for answers, the finger pointing started.
I’d already known I was miserable, trying to work full time and freelance at night. But the pace and stupidity were just piling on the misery. I scaled back and started working full time as a freelancer and I haven’t looked back.
Nope, none of it is worth it if it’s destroying your soul and sucking your life away.
Steve
Laura,
It so common to hear stories like yours, which is why I do what I do here. Great for you for getting out and pursuing something you enjoy.
I only wish more people would follow suit.

Steve,
I’m right beside you, brother. I’ve been planning my escape for quite a while and I realized recently that I can be in ‘planning mode’ forever if I’m not careful. It’s nearly time to jump ship! Great post and awesome blog.
Steve
I appreciate it, Barry
It’s easy to get caught up in all the planning and procrastinate. I’m guilty of this for sure. The great things can only happen when we take action! Good luck to you..

Another great blog, I love the passion you inject into your blogs! I completely agree with what you’re saying here, its so important to do something you enjoy as a job!
Steve
Thanks Harriet! If there is one thing I feel strongly about, it’s getting out of the grind!!!

Hey Steve,
I shall say that to live our passion is not an easy job. It needs us to have perseverance and strong faith to sustain our motivation in facing all difficulties.
Most of the people prefer choose to live in their comfort zone although they suffer the pain doing things they don’t like. Insanity, like you mentioned here!
I really hope God will send your message and mine too, to these people to help them realize the importance to find and do things with their passion.
Thanks mate for sharing your thought here and i’m happy to connect with like-minded people.
Keep up good job, cheers!
Steve
Tariq,
Living our passion isn’t easy for a few reasons I think. One is that many people will never even discover their real passion and two, the vast majority of people get sucked into a regular job and never do what they need to do to get out. It’s so sad.
God has a plan for us all, but that doesn’t mean we have to sit around and wait to see what He gives us. We need to go out and make it happen!

Steve,
Totally agree with you, we MUST do something with it and we must do it now! Procrastinating will lead to a lot of disappointments and frustrations.
Cheers!
Sabrina
I am only 22 years old and still in college. However, I totally understand where you are coming from. Five years from now I want to find myself doing something that I enjoy not just something that pays the bills.
Steve
Sabrina,
This is great news that you have figured this out. Now you need to make sure you don’t end up doing the very thing you are trying to avoid. Nobody wants to be stuck in a job, but very few take action to avoid it.

You have no idea how heartbreaking it is for me to give up my music career… i was in between two big rocks. my health profession which pays more and my music which makes me happier. so obviously i gave it up and now working in health. but of course not so happy. and i am isolated. working in really remote place. i got signed up with not so big time manager but willing to invest to push me up as a musician but i turned it all down. thinking it might not be a success. i am so dumb! whether it pushes through or not, I SHOULD HAVE CHOSEN WHAT REALLY MAKES ME HAPPY! MUSIC! Thanks to this and i called already my manager. let us cross our fingers that he is still up to it. but thank u for this very wonderful insights! so many people i see sacrificing their dreams just to pay bills. now i will always be reminded of MAKE YOUR PASSION PAY YOUR BILLS… 🙂
Steve
Wow! There is nothing as sad as seeing someone give up on their dream, especially for “job security”. I honestly believe that if you love something with all your heart, it can be turned into a highly successful business. It sounds like you love music and that’s so awesome that you’re giving it another shot!
Keep me posted, I’d love to hear how things go…
